📌 Why Is a Chain Shutting Down After 300 Million Transactions?
Several projects have made unexpected decisions recently, leaving many users confused. I’m among them.
While looking at Abstract’s numbers, something struck me as odd.
It has processed more than 325 million transactions and over $6 billion in DEX trading volume. Businesses in its ecosystem have reportedly generated more than $40 million in revenue.
Based on those figures alone, it would be hard to call it a chain with no users.
Yet Abstract is shutting down on December 15.
Why?
One set of numbers stands out more than trading volume:
- Abstract chain fees: approximately $3,900
- Revenue for apps on the chain: approximately $39,000
That’s a roughly tenfold difference over the most recent 24-hour period.
Money made by apps does not automatically flow to the company operating the chain.
When a game sells items or a trading app collects fees, the chain receives the fees generated by processing those transactions.
In other words:
“Economic activity on the chain is thriving”
≠
“The chain itself is a sustainable business”
Igloo said it supported Abstract for approximately 18 months and incurred tens of millions of dollars in costs along the way.
Stagnating growth, thin liquidity and limited institutional participation compounded the problem.
That’s why looking at trading volume alone can be misleading when assessing a chain.
📍 I think it is also important to follow this progression:
How many people came
→ How much economic activity they generated
→ How much of that activity translated into revenue for the chain itself
Abstract produced substantial figures in the first two areas.
The challenge was turning that activity into sustainable economics for the chain itself.
A chain can have many users.
Its apps can make money.
And the chain may still be unsustainable.
When looking at chain data, it helps to consider fees and the revenue that actually accrues to the chain alongside trading volume and active wallets.
💡 An app that users love and a sustainable chain may be more different as businesses than they seem.
⚠️ One more thing.
Abstract is scheduled to shut down on December 15.
If you hold assets on Abstract, check the official channels specified by the project and consider moving them before the shutdown.
