Binance Drained of $5.57 Billion in Suspected Hack, Tether and Circle Freeze $1.8 Billion

At 20:24 UTC on October 29, 167,464 ETH and 63 types of tokens were transferred from Binance-labeled wallets to new addresses, along with 1.615 billion USDT.
Arkham and Decrypt put the outflow at a minimum of $5.57 billion: $3.51 billion on Ethereum, 18,270 bitcoin worth $1.44 billion, and $630 million on Tron.
Binance has not confirmed a hack. It said it was investigating reports of a potential security issue and had found no impact on user funds so far. Founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) gave a different assessment, saying it appeared to be a Binance hack.

1. Funds moved without further signatures

The key issue was not that a private key had been compromised, but that the wallet itself had been given delegated authority to transfer funds. The first transfer took place 3 minutes and 24 seconds after the delegation was registered. An address that had received funds from Tornado Cash used Ethereum's EIP-7702 feature to establish a delegation on a Binance hot wallet, an online wallet used to process withdrawals.
EIP-7702 allows a regular wallet to execute smart contract code. Odysseas Lamchidi of security firm Phylax Systems said that as long as the delegation remains in place, the code can authorize subsequent transfers without additional signatures.
How the attacker obtained the signature remains unconfirmed. Blockaid gave a preliminary estimate that approximately $2.5 billion had left two Ethereum wallets and 780 million USDC had left other accounts, and said it was still reconciling the figures.

2. It was the issuers that froze the funds

Stablecoin issuers froze addresses; the exchange itself did not stop the transfers. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said the company had frozen 1.567 billion USDT in related funds. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said the company had worked with law enforcement to freeze more than $800 million in USDC, while CZ put the Circle figure at $823 million.
Decrypt arrived at approximately $1.8 billion frozen by adding the 975.1 million USDT in the main recipient address to Circle's 823 million USDC. That calculation combines the balance of one address with Circle's figure. Adding the total Tether disclosed to Circle's figure instead comes to approximately $2.4 billion. The final loss is still being assessed.
The attacker is moving the funds quickly. Bitcoin fell below $79,000, down 2.6% over 24 hours, while Binance's token BNB fell 7% to $699. Privacy coin Monero rose 6% to $637.
